5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Let Your Child Take HUMSS

Torn between choosing what the right strand for your kid? Here's a first-hand experiences from one to help you decide whether what to choose: STEM, ABM, HUMSS, Tech-Voc, Arts and Design or Sports? Take in consideration these mind-boggling "5 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Let Your Child Take HUMSS."

Don't enroll your kid as a HUMSS student if:

Reason 1: You don't want your child to know himself/ herself better.

Take it or leave it. You can not possibly answer in an instant the cliche question of "Who Am I?" It may sound so ironic that we, ourselves, do not know who we really are. However,   what is not to know about your self when you have PSYCHOLOGY ? Duh?
Psychology is the science of mind, brain and behavior which is obviously a DISCIPLINE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE. What is it to know about business, technology and different arts in the first place when you do not even know yourself? Psychology helps you deal with it through Ulric Neisser's Five kinds of self knowledge.  One's knowledge of hismself / herself is mainly from the information which is different from one another, resulting in the establishment of different self (Neisser, 2008). The five kinds of self-knowledge are the ff:
  1. ecological self or the inner parts who directs towards physical environment,
  2. interpersonal self or he builds rapport and communication with others,
  3. extended self or "based on memory and anticipation (Neisser, 2008)",
  4. private self or the conscious experiences only knows us, lastl
  5. conceptual self or the view of yourself based on society's standards
Reason 2: You want her to be not socially aware.

People often says that "a picture paints a thousand words." In our strand, we don't just simply read the newspapers, watch the television then, BOOM,

we already believed everything we read or heard. We are trained to be socially aware but be critical also. We looked deeper on the issues our country and the world our facing. We looked into on how the human society deals with it or how they are structured (SOCIOLOGY)

Reason 3: You want her to kept mum.

As part of being a Humanities and Social Science student, he/ she is required to write many things and express her own opinion whether it may be in a fiction and creative way (humanities) or reaction papers (social sciences). A HUMSS student needs to write and write and write and write and write and write again. He/ she will need to sharpen his/ her social awareness and develop "kick-ass debate skills" and standing up for what he/ she knows right. However, dealing with this, one must choose wisely the words they are going to use so you they can create the right meaning they want to convey. In this case, they will deal with LINGUISTICS, the study of language and its structure.

Furthermore, if a person keeps on suppressing their opinions and emotions, Flynn, Hollenstein and Mackey (2010) stated that it can have a depressive effect on the person. The researchers concluded that "Lower acceptance of emotions was associated with the highest depressive symptoms regardless of suppression or gender. With greater acceptance of emotions, suppression was related to more depressive symptoms in men but fewer depressive symptoms in women.(Flynn, Hollenstein & Mackey, 2010)"

Reason 4: You want your child to be blinded.

"Oh no! This is a horrible news."
"Pakipatay ang TV, 'di dapat makita yan ng mga bata."
"Not for kids."
If you are an overly protective and sensitive parent, HUMSS is definitely not the one for your child. In this strand, we tackle even the most gruesome and cruel things around us from the killings to the senate issues and many other more. How bad or the goverment system (POLITAL SCIENCE) is definitely one of the most interesting topics we've discussed. If you don't want your kid running around the busy street of Batasan to get a glimpse of how it is live to hear SONA right outside the halls of the House of Representatives or get on a crowded place to see how society really works, HUMSS for your child is a no-no! Why don't you just hide her in a four-corner room while all he/ she will ever do is to compute math equations or discover how the body works and such things?

Reason 5: You want your child's life to be filled with fantasies.

"OMG, Unicornnnnnnns!"
However, if you enroll your child to HUMSS, he/ she won't be dealing with unicorns. A HUMSS students never deal with something of a fantasy (well, except the fact the we write fictional literatures). We deal with reality. We look at the world with no filter. We see it just the way it is and try to find solutions on the biggest issues in the world.

And that is one reason why you should send your child to school as a HUMSS student: "We deal with reality and find solutions to the world biggest issues which are mainly from the science, technology and businesses.  If you want him/her to take part in building a better nation, send him/ her in this track. Together, let us build a safer and more innovative place to live in.

xoxo,
HUMSS Student
